“Nein, danke,” is what Mercedes-Benz will say if you ever try to buy one of their 1955 300SLR Coupé cars. The company has been very clear on this matter, and has been refusing to sell this car ever since it was built in 1955. The most recent serious offer was an incredible $25 million, an offer we know Mercedes-Benz politely declined.
What’s so special? Only two 1955 300SLR Coupé prototype cars were ever constructed, and both were built with the goal of winning the 1956 Le Mans 24 Hours race. With 300 brake horsepower and a top speed north of 180 miles per hour, victory was a realistic goal. But Mercedes-Benz abruptly pulled out of motor racing in 1956, and so company director Rudolf Uhlenhaut decided to add a few details and keep a 1955 30SLR as his company car, unofficially known as “The Uhlenhaut Coupé,” the fastest road-legal closed car in the whole world.
Mercedes-Benz now keeps both cars in the factory, in perfect condition. They still won’t sell either to you, and never will, but you can own this 1:18 die-cast replica, complete with gullwing doors. You are welcome to offer us $25,000,000 but, rather than politely decline, we will negotiate you down.
